Forensic Science on 2019-nCoV

Having lived through SARS and MERS while traveling in both regions, I take the panic with some skepticism. Take precaution, but not to the point of panic.

As 2019-nCoV has reached the Bay Area, I take the mix of public press as a mix of facts and growing panic. Given the lengthy gestation period and global travel patterns, it’s going to seem a lot worse before it gets better.

A lot has been said about the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market(武汉华南海鲜批发市场) where this virus potentially originated. And this where I’ve read the most racist articles blaming the Chinese, the wildlife trade, poor people, “those people”, etc. I’ve been waiting for the forensic research to start showing other possibilities. Here’s the first report I’ve seen with some analysis:

I’ve read many conspiracy theories and heard of people cancelling trips. Everyone has a different level of risk tolerance. Mine is very high it seems. I’m flying for the next two weeks. And yes, I’m bringing a mask just in case. Too bad I can’t bring melee weapons to fend off the zombies…

Semper paratus.
